Cursor is an AI coding assistant from the US company Anysphere, Inc. (founded 2022, first released 2023). Unlike pure chat assistants, Cursor is a full development environment built on Visual Studio Code: the AI features sit in the editor core rather than being a bolted-on extension. Cursor runs as a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with an additional command-line version plus integrations for Slack and GitHub pull-request review. The desktop app is installed from the download on the official website; the CLI ships as an install script.
What Cursor does
Its best-known feature is "Tab," a proprietary autocomplete model that predicts multi-line, multi-cursor edits while taking the surrounding code into account. The "Agent" (also called "Composer") works agentically across multiple files, reasons about project structure and dependencies per the vendor, and executes multi-step plans – from drafting a feature in Plan mode through implementation to tests. There is also inline editing, an Ask function for questions about the codebase, terminal integration, and "Bugbot" for automatic pull-request review. Through MCP (Model Context Protocol), skills, and hooks, Cursor can be extended with external tools and custom rules.
Cloud and background agents
Per the vendor, agents can build, test, and demo a result for review on their own machines in the cloud. Several agents can run in parallel on large tasks for hours, and always-on agents can run on a schedule or in response to triggers.
Models
Cursor bundles several current models under one interface, including models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google as well as Anysphere's own Grok and Composer models. Which models are available, and to what extent, depends on the chosen plan.
Hobby (free)
The free entry point requires no credit card and includes a limited number of Agent requests and access to Composer. It is enough for occasional testing and small tasks.
Pro
Pro significantly raises the Agent limits, opens up generous quotas for the in-house models, and unlocks access to frontier models, cloud agents, and MCP, skills, and hooks. Bugbot is billed on usage. For regular coding at work or in school, this is the natural plan.
Pro+
Per the vendor, Pro+ offers three times the Pro Agent limits and higher usage limits for the in-house models. It targets power users who regularly exhaust the Pro quotas.
Ultra
Per the vendor, Ultra cites twenty times the Pro Agent limits, the highest usage limits for the in-house models, and priority access to new features. It is meant for all-day, intensive use.
Teams and Enterprise
For organizations, Anysphere offers per-seat plans with included usage, shared credit pools, and pre-commitment for high volume. Admins control role permissions, allow or block repositories, models, and MCP servers, and see usage analytics. Enterprise adds single sign-on with Okta, Azure AD, or Google Workspace, SCIM user provisioning, an organization-wide enforced Privacy Mode, and – per the vendor – zero-data-retention agreements with all model providers. Anysphere cites certifications including SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, and AIUC-1, plus AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2+ in transit.
Privacy
With Privacy Mode enabled, code is not used for training, per the vendor. In Team and Enterprise environments, Privacy Mode can be enforced across the organization. Anysphere lists specific prices on its official pricing page.
Which plan fits whom
Anyone who only wants to try Cursor or use it for very small tasks will get by with Hobby. For regular coding, Pro is the standard; anyone constantly hitting the Agent quotas moves to Pro+ or, for all-day use, to Ultra. Teams turn to the per-seat plans once they need central administration, shared credits, or enforced Privacy Mode; Enterprise becomes necessary with high requirements for SSO, user provisioning, and compliance.
