The Vercel Workflow skill comes from Vercel’s official vercel/workflow repository and explains how to work with Vercel’s Workflow SDK. Its primary source is the skills/workflow directory; the complementary documentation at vercel.com/docs/workflows presents the product as a foundation for applications and agents whose steps can retry after failures, wait for external events, and resume across crashes or deployments. According to the provider, Vercel Workflows target long-lived processes rather than one particular business application. This catalog entry therefore describes technical guidance, not a hosted workflow service, a finished queue, or a guarantee that business logic is correct.
Purpose and independent scope
The skill has an independent scope because it addresses a distinct orchestration problem: asynchronous functions need to manage progress, retries, waiting periods, and results over longer time spans. That separates it from the already cataloged Vercel AI SDK skill. The AI SDK skill focuses on model calls, streaming, structured output, tools, and agents in TypeScript applications. Vercel Workflow instead explains durability, execution steps, hooks, starting runs, error classes, and the boundary between workflow and step contexts. The two can be used together, but they are not duplicates.
Workflow and step model
According to the provider, durable orchestration uses the directives use workflow and use step. A workflow coordinates the sequence and remains deliberately constrained inside its sandbox context. Steps hold logic that needs full Node.js or package access. This separation helps place external calls, data processing, and side effects at a location that can be reviewed. Automatic retries and persisted results may absorb transient failures, but they do not replace engineering review of idempotency, ordering, and side effects. Inputs and results must be serializable; not every function or class instance can cross a workflow boundary.
Pauses, events, and agents
Hooks allow a run to pause for an external event and then resume. This is useful for approvals, callbacks, or multi-part interactions. The source also covers starting workflows and child workflows as well as handling failures with fatal and retryable error classes. Integration with DurableAgent connects Vercel Workflows to durable AI agents. That makes the skill relevant to agentic processes, but it does not transfer responsibility for model choice, tool authorization, data flows, or visible confirmation away from the application team.
Security, E-E-A-T, and boundaries
According to the provider, Vercel operates the official Workflow repository and its related documentation. Statements about directives, hooks, sandbox limits, error handling, and DurableAgent are grounded in those primary sources and should be reviewed when the SDK changes. Prompts, event payloads, and external responses are untrusted input and must not grant permission for write actions. Steps with network, file, database, or deployment access need least privilege, time limits, logging, and human approval for irreversible changes. Secrets, tokens, private keys, and personal production data do not belong in skill text, examples, or logs. Local development does not automatically mean data stays local because connected model or platform providers may process content. The skill does not replace architecture review, failure and load testing, privacy assessment, or rollback design. Check current technical conditions and licensing directly with Vercel; this entry states no concrete prices.
