Mistral AI develops both open-weight and proprietary language models, deliberately positioning itself as a European, "sovereign" alternative to predominantly US-dominated AI providers. Its product portfolio includes Vibe as an AI agent for long-horizon work such as enterprise knowledge search and document synthesis, Vibe for Code as an autonomous coding agent built into the terminal or IDE, Studio for building and testing custom AI agents, and Forge for custom model training and alignment.

Access is available through Mistral's own cloud API, self-hosted deployments, or integrations with major cloud providers including Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure, plus partners like SAP and NVIDIA. Mistral also offers "Applied AI Services" with hands-on guidance for custom implementations.

The company was founded in France, including by former researchers from Meta and DeepMind, and has raised around €3 billion in funding to date. Its customers include well-known companies such as HSBC, ASML, TotalEnergies, and Cisco — a sign that despite its relatively short history, Mistral is already well established in the European enterprise market.

Unlike many competitors, Mistral releases some of its models under open licenses, enabling transparency and self-hosting without depending on a single cloud API.

The model family isn't limited to text generation: with Mistral OCR and Voxtral, the company also offers specialized models for document text recognition and speech synthesis, rather than focusing solely on classic chat models.
