HashiCorp, part of IBM since its acquisition, builds tools for managing hybrid cloud infrastructure across two main areas. In infrastructure lifecycle management, that includes Terraform for infrastructure-as-code, Packer for machine images, Nomad for workload orchestration, and Waypoint as an internal developer platform. On the security side, Vault manages secrets and identities, while Boundary secures access for humans, machines, and increasingly AI agents.
The official Terraform MCP Server lets AI-driven workflows work with infrastructure-as-code directly — for example, to review Terraform configurations or look up provider documentation without switching context.
The products are available both as a managed cloud offering (HashiCorp Cloud Platform) and for self-managed deployment. HashiCorp says it serves Global 2000 organizations and maintains an ecosystem of more than 930 partners and over 4,000 integrations.
Alongside Vault, HashiCorp offers Vault Radar, which detects credentials accidentally scattered across code and repositories, and Consul for service-based networking in distributed systems. Like Terraform, both products can be self-managed or consumed through the HashiCorp Cloud Platform.
HashiCorp was founded in 2012 by Mitchell Hashimoto and Armon Dadgar, who first released Vagrant, a tool for reproducible development environments, before shifting focus to today's infrastructure and security products. IBM's acquisition of HashiCorp, announced in 2024 and completed in 2025, was one of the larger consolidations in the infrastructure-as-code market.
