Cognition develops Devin, described as the first autonomous AI software engineer: Devin plans, writes, tests, and ships production code within existing codebases and development tools, rather than just offering individual code suggestions. The company deliberately positions the technology as a complement to human developers, not a replacement — Devin works within existing team workflows, freeing people to focus more on strategic decisions.
With FrontierCode, Cognition has also introduced its own benchmark measuring whether AI-generated code would actually be merged into a project by human maintainers — evaluating correctness, test quality, scope, style, and adherence to project standards, not just whether the code technically works.
Devin is available through desktop applications, a CLI tool, and integrations such as Windsurf. Through the DeepWiki MCP server, automatically generated documentation for code repositories can also be pulled directly into AI agents.
According to the company, it recently crossed $1 billion in annualized recurring revenue and closed a Series E funding round — a strong growth signal for a still-young company in the autonomous coding agent space.
