Obsidian Skills is the official plugin bundle from the public [kepano/obsidian-skills repository](https://github.com/kepano/obsidian-skills). It packages Agent Skills for working with Obsidian vaults and their open file formats. The official [skills directory](https://github.com/kepano/obsidian-skills/tree/main/skills) is the product-oriented overview of the individual skills, while the repository contains installation instructions, the license, and the full source. This package is not a standalone AI chat, a synchronized cloud service, or a collection of ready-made notes. It gives a compatible agent focused operating instructions so it can account for Obsidian-specific syntax, local vault structure, and the available tools more reliably.
What the plugin bundles
According to the README, the collection contains five skills. obsidian-markdown covers Obsidian Flavored Markdown, including wikilinks, embeds, callouts, and properties. obsidian-bases is for .base files with views, filters, formulas, and summaries. json-canvas covers editing Canvas files with nodes, edges, groups, and connections. obsidian-cli explains command-line work with a running Obsidian instance, including reading, creating, searching, and managing notes, tasks, and properties. defuddle extracts web pages as clean Markdown while reducing distracting page material. The plugin therefore packages several related capabilities in one installable unit instead of requiring a team to copy them individually into every project.
Installation and supported agents
For the official Marketplace route, the repository first adds the marketplace and then installs this plugin:
/plugin marketplace add kepano/obsidian-skills
/plugin install obsidian@obsidian-skills
The catalog stores the second command because it activates the package itself; the marketplace must be available first. The README also documents the general skills CLI through npx skills add git@github.com:kepano/obsidian-skills.git or its HTTPS URL. For Claude Code, the repository contents can be placed in a vault’s .claude folder. For Codex, the skills/ directory is copied into the usual skills path, which is why the package is assigned to the Claude Code and Codex compatibilities. The README also names OpenCode, using a full Git clone into ~/.opencode/skills/obsidian-skills. That client is not assigned as a catalog compatibility because the current taxonomy has no separate OpenCode record.
Working with a vault and the CLI
Per the source, the CLI skill requires an open Obsidian instance. It documents commands to read existing notes, create and append files, search, work with daily notes, tasks, tags, backlinks, and properties. A vault can be targeted explicitly by name when more than one is available. For plugin and theme development, it also documents a cycle: reload the plugin, check errors, verify visually through a screenshot or DOM inspection, and then review console output. This is guidance for an agent, not a promise that every client may run those commands. Whether an agent can alter files or use the Obsidian CLI still depends on its installation, permissions, and the open vault.
Suitable use cases and limits
Obsidian Skills fits teams and individuals who want an agent to help maintain knowledge bases, project notes, editorial material, or structured work lists. The Content and Office categories represent those two main outcomes: content is created and maintained as Markdown, Bases, or Canvas files, while the package also supports everyday work with notes, tasks, and properties. It is particularly useful where a vault already has conventions for links, properties, folders, or templates and an agent should not treat it as generic Markdown.
The package does not replace backups or content review. Agents can misread wikilinks, frontmatter, or files and can make unwanted changes when given write access to a vault. Before allowing writes, use a backup, version control, or at least a clearly separated test vault. Material extracted by defuddle remains source material whose accuracy, rights, and currency must be checked. The repository is MIT licensed, subject to that license’s terms. The GitHub API reported exactly 47,960 stars for the repository on 2026-09-07; this value is stored as a point-in-time popularity signal. Stars are not proof of quality or security.
