Prisma MCP Server

Official remote MCP server from Prisma: manage Postgres databases, backups, object storage, and compute deployments through an AI assistant.

Description

The Prisma MCP Server connects AI assistants such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor to the Prisma platform. Instead of switching between console, terminal, and documentation, you describe in natural language what should happen: create a new Postgres database, read a schema, run a query, or roll back a deployment. The server is operated by Prisma itself and, according to the documentation, is reachable as a hosted endpoint at mcp.prisma.io, so nothing needs to be installed or started locally.

What is the Prisma MCP Server?

Prisma is known to many developers as an ORM for TypeScript. Around that tool the company has built a platform: Prisma Postgres as a managed database service, object storage for files, and compute for hosting applications. The MCP server makes exactly this platform operable for language models. The connection runs over Streamable HTTP, you sign in with your Prisma account, and then you select the workspace in which the assistant may work.

Which tools are available?

The official tool reference groups the offering into several areas. For databases there are tools to list, create, and delete Prisma Postgres instances and to manage connection strings. Added to that are listing automated backups and restoring a database from one. With introspect_database_schema the assistant reads the structure of a database, with execute_sql_query it runs SQL, and with the schema update tool it changes the schema. In object storage, buckets and S3-compatible access keys can be created and deleted. For compute there are apps, builds, deployments, and runtime logs, plus tools to start, stop, promote, and roll back deployments and to set environment variables. This is complemented by a documentation search and a view of the connections between services in Composer projects.

What is it particularly useful for?

The biggest gain lies in everyday development. Anyone working with a coding agent on a new application can have the database provisioned straight from the chat, inspect the schema, check test data, and read a deployment's logs when something goes wrong, without leaving the editor. Clean-up work, such as removing old connection strings or buckets, also goes faster. Because the documentation search lives in the same server, the assistant can also answer questions about Prisma using the current official documentation instead of relying on outdated training knowledge.

Setup

Register the URL https://mcp.prisma.io/mcp as a remote server in your MCP client. The documentation lists guides for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Desktop and Claude on the web, ChatGPT, Gemini CLI, and Warp. On first connection the Prisma sign-in opens, after which you choose the workspace. The documentation page we reviewed does not describe a local variant.

Security and permissions

The server has tools that modify data or delete it irreversibly, including deleting databases, buckets, and apps, as well as SQL queries that can write or remove data. Prisma itself points out in the documentation that such tools can cause data loss or interrupt live traffic, and recommends checking the target workspace and resources before approving an operation. Therefore always have destructive calls confirmed one by one, use a separate workspace for experiments where possible, and do not expose production databases to the assistant when it does not need them.

Costs

The MCP server is an addition to the Prisma platform. According to the official pricing page there is a free plan without a time limit as well as paid plans; which databases, storage, and compute resources they include is shown on Prisma's pricing page. According to the documentation we reviewed, there is no separate fee for the server itself, but the managed resources are billed according to your plan.

Who is the Prisma MCP Server for?

It is worthwhile for teams and individuals who already use or want to try Prisma Postgres, object storage, or compute and want their AI assistant to work directly with the platform. Anyone who uses Prisma solely as an ORM against a third-party database gains little from this server, because it manages resources of the Prisma platform and not arbitrary databases. For projects with sensitive production data: try it in a test workspace first and grant write rights deliberately.

Requirements

A Prisma account with a workspace and an MCP client that supports remote servers (Streamable HTTP), such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, or Claude Desktop.

Installation instructions

With the Prisma MCP Server, an AI assistant manages databases, object storage, and compute deployments of your Prisma workspace. This guide leads from sign-in to the first safe request.

Step 1: Check the prerequisites

You need a Prisma account with at least one workspace and an MCP client that supports remote servers via Streamable HTTP, such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or VS Code.

Step 2: Register the server

Register the URL https://mcp.prisma.io/mcp as a remote server. In Claude Code the command claude mcp add --transport http prisma https://mcp.prisma.io/mcp is enough. For Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, and other clients, the Prisma documentation shows the matching configuration file or a one-click route.

bash
claude mcp add --transport http prisma https://mcp.prisma.io/mcp

Step 3: Sign in and choose a workspace

On first connection, the Prisma sign-in opens. Sign in and select the workspace in which the assistant may work. For first experiments, use a test workspace without production data.

Step 4: Test the connection

Start with read-only requests, such as "List my Prisma Postgres databases" or "Show the schema of database X". Check that the assistant uses the right workspace.

Keep destructive tools under control

The server can delete databases, buckets, and apps and run SQL that changes data. Always have such calls confirmed one by one in your client and check target and resource before agreeing. Do not allow automatic approval for tools with delete in the name.

Working day to day

Have the assistant read the schema and describe the planned query before making changes. For deployments, check logs and the list of deployments first before triggering a rollback.

claude mcp add --transport http prisma https://mcp.prisma.io/mcp

Authentication

Sign-in with the Prisma account in the browser and selection of a workspace.

Required access permissions

Access to databases, connection strings, backups, object storage buckets, compute apps, deployments, and environment variables in the selected workspace, including write and delete operations.

Transmitted or stored data

The server runs hosted by Prisma. Query results, schemas, and logs the assistant retrieves enter the AI client context and therefore reach the model provider.

Security risks

Irreversible deletion of databases, buckets, access keys, and apps, write SQL queries against production data, and accidental overwriting of environment variables or rollbacks of live deployments.
