The Airbyte Agent MCP gives an AI assistant access to services you connect through Airbyte Agents. This guide leads from sign-in to the first query.
Prerequisites
You need an Airbyte Agents account at app.airbyte.ai, an MCP client with OAuth and Streamable HTTP support, and credentials for every service you want to connect.
Connect the server in Claude Code
The command is claude mcp add --transport http airbyte-agent https://mcp.airbyte.ai/mcp. Then open /mcp in a session, select the server, and sign in to Airbyte in the browser.
Other clients
In Claude Desktop you add a custom connector with the server address under Settings and Connectors; according to the documentation do not use the file claude_desktop_config.json for this. For Codex there is codex mcp add airbyte --url https://mcp.airbyte.ai/mcp; Cursor and VS Code enter the address in their server settings or in the file mcp.json.
Connect connectors
Every service has its own credential flow in the browser, via OAuth consent or a form. Never enter credentials in the chat. Begin with an uncritical service.
Limit the risks
Check the requested permissions on every consent page. Where write access is possible the assistant can change records; so start with read-only queries.
First queries
Ask, for example: "Which connectors are connected?" or "Search my ticket system for open items from this week". The assistant first reads the description of the connector for this.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to install anything?
No, Airbyte runs the server itself. You only enter the address in the client and sign in via OAuth. For connectors you additionally need credentials for the respective service.
Where do I enter passwords or keys for the services?
According to the documentation always in the browser via the consent page or the connector form, never in the chat. That way they do not end up in the assistant conversation history.
Is a paid plan required?
The documentation lists the feature for the Free, Individual, Team, and Custom plans. The exact terms are on the official Airbyte page and should be checked before use.
Why does Claude Desktop not connect via the configuration file?
The documentation warns against using claude_desktop_config.json. Instead add a custom connector with the server address under Connectors in the settings.
