Canva MCP Server

Canva's official hosted MCP server ("AI Connector"): generate, edit, search, export, and comment on designs straight from your AI assistant.

Description

Canva MCP Server is Canva's official Model Context Protocol server, referred to within the Canva ecosystem as the "AI Connector." It is operated by Canva itself and offered exclusively as a hosted service at https://mcp.canva.com/mcp, which makes it a remote MCP server with no local installation. It connects MCP-capable AI assistants — according to Canva these include Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, and VS Code — directly to a signed-in Canva account, so design work can be started, revised, and exported from the chat instead of switching back and forth between the assistant and the Canva interface.

What the server can do

According to the provider, the server exposes around three dozen tools grouped by task area: generating designs with AI (generate-design), editing existing designs inside a transaction (start-editing-transaction, perform-editing-operations, commit-editing-transaction), searching your own design library and folders, uploading assets from external URLs, exporting designs in formats such as PDF, PNG, JPG, PPTX, or MP4, reading and replying to comments, and importing a design from a URL. Higher tiers add resizing to new dimensions as well as autofilling brand templates with your own content, brand kits, and brand templates. The documentation lists a separate per-minute rate limit for each tool.

Plan-dependent feature set

Canva scopes the tools by account type. On every plan — including free accounts — design generation, editing, search, export, comments, and asset uploads are available. Resizing to new dimensions, searching brand templates, and listing brand kits require Canva Pro or above. Autofill with your own content and brand-specific templates are reserved for Enterprise accounts. Canva also notes that a per-account credit model applies to certain tools such as generate-design. This catalog entry deliberately states no concrete amounts; the official Canva pricing page is authoritative.

Where it fits for Skill Road

The server fills a gap beyond pure coding tools: it is aimed at content, marketing, and social media teams that no longer want to assemble graphics, presentations, or social posts by hand in Canva, but instead draft them from an assistant and then keep working on them as a team. The practical advantage over generic image generation is that results land in the account as real, editable Canva designs — with access to existing folders, brands, and export formats. That also sets this entry apart from the many unofficial Canva community servers: the operator, the endpoint, and the terms of use come straight from Canva here.

Security and data flow

Each connection is authorized per user via OAuth; the recommended method is Client ID Metadata Documents (CIMD), while Dynamic Client Registration remains available for older clients but is considered deprecated. According to Canva, MCP agents act strictly within the authenticated user's permission scope. Canva's usage policy prohibits, among other things, using Canva-sourced data, prompts, outputs, or brand kit elements to train AI models, and Canva reserves the right to withdraw MCP access for violations. Write actions — such as creating or overwriting designs — should be reviewed before they run.

Who benefits from it

The entry makes sense for anyone already working in Canva who also uses an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT. If you do not use Canva or only need a one-off image, generic image generation is simpler. For recurring, brand-bound design work across a team, the direct line into the Canva account is the real gain, because drafting, approval, and export all stay in the same tool.

Requirements

A Canva account (free is enough for core features) and an MCP client that can connect to remote servers via OAuth. Clients without native remote support need Node.js for the mcp-remote bridge.

Installation instructions

Add the remote server https://mcp.canva.com/mcp in the MCP client and sign in to the Canva account via OAuth on first use. Clients without remote support use npx -y mcp-remote@latest https://mcp.canva.com/mcp.

npx -y mcp-remote@latest https://mcp.canva.com/mcp

Authentication

Per-user OAuth; Client ID Metadata Documents (CIMD) is recommended. Dynamic Client Registration is still possible for older clients but deprecated.

Required access permissions

The agent acts within the signed-in Canva account's permission scope. The available tool set depends on the plan: core features on all plans, resizing and brand-template search from Canva Pro, autofill Enterprise only.

Transmitted or stored data

Tool calls go to the Canva API; designs, assets, and comments are returned to the MCP client. Canva's usage policy forbids using Canva data, prompts, or outputs to train AI models.

Security risks

Natural language can create and overwrite designs. Review write actions before they run, collect AI drafts in a dedicated folder, and limit access to the account that is actually needed.
