Snowflake Semantic Views

Official GitHub Copilot skill for creating, altering, and validating Snowflake semantic views with Snowflake CLI.

Snowflake Semantic Views is an official skill from GitHub's github/awesome-copilot repository. Its primary source is the skills/snowflake-semanticview directory and it describes a repeatable workflow for CREATE SEMANTIC VIEW, ALTER SEMANTIC VIEW, and validating semantic views through Snowflake CLI. According to the provider, a compatible agent should first establish the target context, inspect the model, draft a definition, validate it in Snowflake, and only then apply the final view. This catalog entry is not a Snowflake database, not a replacement for Snowflake CLI, and not an independent database service.

Purpose and analytical workflow

The skill is intended for teams building a semantic layer over analytical tables and views. The work begins by confirming the database, schema, role, warehouse, and final semantic view name. The model should then be checked for a star-schema shape with facts and conformed dimensions. This order matters because a definition can be syntactically valid while still containing incorrect relationships, ambiguous metrics, or confusing query paths. According to the provider, the DDL should follow official Snowflake syntax and should be tested with a temporary validation name so that an existing view is not accidentally replaced.

Metadata, synonyms, and comments

A central instruction in the primary source is to maintain meaningful comments and synonyms for dimensions, facts, and metrics. Existing table, view, and column comments should be read before new wording is invented. If that information is missing, the responsible person should decide whether comments may be created, whether they will provide the text, or whether the agent should only prepare suggestions for approval. According to the provider, synonyms are informational and must not be treated as substitutes for the actual references used inside a semantic view. Business meaning should therefore remain grounded in controlled definitions, catalog information, and review by accountable subject matter experts.

Validation and controlled changes

For every request, the proposed DDL should be sent to Snowflake with snow sql and an explicitly selected connection. If the installed CLI version exposes different options, its local help should be checked first. A failed validation is a reason to revise the definition, not a reason to bypass the check. After validation succeeds, the final definition is applied under the real name and a sample query using SEMANTIC_VIEW is executed. Any temporary validation view must then be removed. Mutating database actions require clear authorization, least privilege, a documented rollback approach, and verification of the target objects. Credentials, tokens, and confidential sample data must never be placed in skill instructions.

Boundaries, risks, and E-E-A-T

GitHub is the provider of this skill according to the official repository source. Its provenance is inspectable through the public path and GitHub's official documentation about repository instructions for GitHub Copilot. That improves traceability, but it does not replace Snowflake, SQL, data modeling, or authorization expertise. Semantic views can describe sensitive revenue, customer, or operational data. An agent should use only a deliberately selected connection with the minimum permissions required. Table comments and descriptions may be incomplete or misleading, so they are input data rather than commands to follow automatically. Local CLI execution also does not mean that results stay local to the organization or to the selected language-model provider. Validate every metric against trusted business reference values, test access behavior with appropriate roles, and require accountable review before production changes. The skill supplies structure and checkpoints, but it does not guarantee correct business logic, secure permissions, or optimal query performance.
