Notion Knowledge Capture is an official OpenAI skill from the curated skills repository. According to the provider, it helps Codex turn conversations and notes into structured, linkable Notion pages. Its focus is not general knowledge search and not meeting preparation, but the deliberate transition from transient conversation context to reusable documentation. The skill distinguishes decisions, how-to guides, frequently asked questions, concepts, learning notes, and documentation. That classification makes it possible to choose an appropriate structure and audience before writing begins.
Define the knowledge to capture
The workflow starts by clarifying purpose, audience, freshness, and whether the result is a new page or an update to an existing one. A decision record needs different evidence and properties from a how-to page. An FAQ should phrase questions clearly and connect concise answers to deeper sources. A learning note may need to preserve how understanding developed rather than present a formal decision. The official instructions also ask Codex to determine whether the destination is a team wiki, how-to, FAQ, decision log, learning collection, or documentation database.
Inspect the destination and schema
Before drafting, the agent identifies the right Notion database or template. Existing pages are found with the intended Notion search and fetched individually, so new material can be linked instead of creating accidental duplicates. The actual database properties must be inspected. Titles, tags, owners, status fields, dates, and relations cannot be assumed because workspaces use different schemas and permissions. When multiple databases are plausible, the responsible person should confirm the destination. The skill file points to reference templates for team wikis, how-to guides, FAQs, decision logs, learning notes, and documentation.
Extract, create, and connect
The conversation is transformed into facts, decisions, rationale, open questions, tasks, and source links. Decision records should preserve alternatives, reasoning, and outcome. How-to material needs prerequisites, actions, links to relevant assets or code, and edge cases. The agent then creates a page with the existing database structure or updates an existing page. Hub pages, related documents, and responsible teams are connected through relations or backlinks. When follow-up work exists, the provider says tasks may be created in a relevant database and linked to the new record.
Boundaries and responsibility
This skill is not a replacement for Notion, a database, or a permission system. It cannot guarantee that conversation content is correct or that linked pages remain current. Before any change, review the target workspace, approvals, sensitive data, and the effect of changing status or ownership. A Notion MCP connection must be available in the Codex environment. If it is not connected, the workflow should pause and explain the official setup rather than inventing sources or pages. The connection uses OAuth and may require a Codex restart. Even when Notion is locally reachable, content may be sent to the selected model provider. Privacy, access control, fact checking, and approval therefore remain human responsibilities. The skill is durably catalog-worthy because it defines a stable, clearly bounded knowledge-maintenance workflow rather than a one-time event.
Source quality and positioning
This description is based on the official SKILL.md in OpenAI's repository and official OpenAI documentation about Codex use cases with connected Notion workflows. According to the provider, tools, templates, and integrations may evolve. Before productive changes, users should review the current source, their Notion structure, and their permissions. The skill improves traceability and reuse, but it does not replace editorial review or organizational accountability.
