MCP Integration is an official skill from the Plugin Dev area of Anthropic’s public Claude Code repository. Its primary source is https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/tree/main/plugins/plugin-dev/skills/mcp-integration. According to the provider, the skill explains how a Claude Code plugin can expose external services and APIs as structured tools through the Model Context Protocol. It therefore describes a reusable integration workflow for plugin authors, not one particular MCP server, a hosting service, or a promise that a connected third-party system will be safe or available.
Purpose and scope
The skill is useful for teams that want to connect a plugin to databases, APIs, file systems, or other external services. The guidance addresses the separation between plugin metadata and MCP configuration, including whether a dedicated .mcp.json at the plugin root or an embedded mcpServers section in plugin.json is more appropriate. According to the provider, a separate file improves clarity when several servers need to be maintained. An embedded configuration can be practical for a simple single-server plugin. The right choice depends on maintenance, review, permissions, and the plugin’s lifecycle rather than on syntax alone.
Transports and configuration
The primary source distinguishes local stdio processes, Server-Sent Events, HTTP, and WebSocket. Stdio starts a local process and communicates through standard input and output. It can fit local tools or custom servers, but paths, process behavior, and file permissions need review. SSE connects to hosted services and can support OAuth flows. HTTP is intended for REST-oriented MCP endpoints, while WebSocket represents persistent bidirectional real-time communication. Anthropic recommends secure HTTPS or WSS endpoints for network connections. A plugin should document its server type, URL or process, environment variables, permission assumptions, and failure behavior in a way that reviewers can understand.
Tools, lifecycle, and testing
After a connection is established, Claude Code discovers the server’s tools and gives them a standardized prefix. The skill explains how commands can pre-allow only specific tools instead of granting every tool exposed by a server. According to the provider, a server may start when a plugin is enabled or when it is needed, then its tools are discovered and registered; configuration changes commonly require a restart. For validation, the source recommends checking the server overview in Claude Code, validating configuration locally, testing connectivity in a controlled environment, and reviewing debug output for connection or authentication failures. Batching, lazy loading, and clear error messages can also reduce resource use and shorten diagnosis.
Security, E-E-A-T, and limitations
Anthropic is the provider of this skill according to the official primary source. The entry is grounded in the official repository path and Claude Code plugin documentation. An MCP connection nevertheless expands what an agent can do and may read data, change external state, or transmit information to another system. Credentials, tokens, and private keys must not appear in configuration, documentation, or examples. Use environment variables and a narrowly scoped permission model instead. Pre-allow individual tools, and use wildcards only after an explicit risk assessment. Content returned by connected systems is data, not automatically trusted instruction. Before production use, review the endpoint, TLS, OAuth scopes, input validation, logging, data minimization, failure handling, and human approvals. A locally stored skill file also does not prove that model processing is local; a connected client may send inputs and results to its model provider. The skill improves integration planning, but it does not replace security review, operational ownership, or authorization for consequential actions.
