Tavily operates a web access API built specifically for AI agents and language models, and publishes the official Tavily MCP Server. The goal is to ground language models in current web data, reducing the hallucinations that occur when a model relies only on its (potentially outdated) training knowledge.
The platform offers several specialized endpoints: Search delivers fast, AI-optimized web results, Extract converts content into a structured format directly usable by language models, Research provides a dedicated agent for more comprehensive web investigations, Crawl extracts full website content, and Map discovers a website's URL structure. Built-in security, privacy, and content validation layers are designed to block PII leakage, prompt injection attacks, and malicious sources.
According to the company, Tavily processes more than 300 million requests per month with a 99.99% uptime SLA and a 180-millisecond median response time for the search API; more than 2 million developers use the service, with partners including JetBrains, IBM, Databricks, and Mastercard.
The company was recently acquired by Nebius, after previously raising $25 million in a Series A round. The business model is freemium, with a free entry tier and tiered paid plans; direct integrations are available for OpenAI, Anthropic, and Groq.
Tavily was founded in 2023 in Tel Aviv by Rotem Weiss and Assaf Elovic, with the explicit goal of rethinking web search specifically for the era of autonomous AI agents, rather than simply exposing existing search engines built for humans through an API.
