Smithery

Smithery operates a registry and marketplace for MCP servers, giving AI agents access to more than 24,000 listed tools and services. Instead of configuring every MCP server individually, developers publish their servers through Smithery, and users discover them there and wire them into their own AI tools.

A key feature is automated authentication management: OAuth flows and credentials are handled behind the scenes through agent.pw, an open-source "agent vault," so users don't need to manage API keys manually. Once set up, connections work across platforms — whether in Claude, GPT-based applications, or open-source models, and across chat agents, background processes, or CLI tools.

The Smithery CLI lets MCP servers be authenticated, added, listed, and called directly from the terminal, without going through a graphical interface. The business model is freemium: core registry and CLI functionality is free, with paid tiers offering additional features.

Smithery has since merged with Arcade.dev, another provider of secure tool execution for AI agents — a sign that the MCP infrastructure landscape is increasingly consolidating.

Because Smithery stores connections independently of the specific AI tool in use, a service connection set up once doesn't need to be reconfigured if a team later switches to a different language model or client.
