PostHog operates a product platform for analytics, feature flags, experiments, session replay, error tracking, and other product tools, and publishes the official PostHog MCP Server. The company describes its goal as making products "self-driving": usage data, errors, session recordings, and business data are captured centrally so that both people and AI agents can query and act on them.
Its feature set includes standard product analytics with funnel analysis, session replay for reviewing actual user interactions, feature flags for controlled rollouts of new functionality, and surveys and SDK setup tools. PostHog AI adds AI-powered investigation across multiple data sources — for example, correlating Google Ads campaigns, Stripe payments, and GitHub changes to surface connections between product decisions and business metrics.
The business model combines an open core with a self-hostable version and a cloud option; the company says 97% of users pay nothing, with no credit card required to get started. It reports being used by more than 500,000 teams.
The PostHog MCP Server lets product data, feature flags, and experiments be queried and managed directly from AI-driven development environments, instead of working exclusively through the web dashboard.
PostHog was founded on January 23, 2020, by James Hawkins and Tim Glaser, who had previously met at the London-based regtech startup Arachnys. The product was built during Y Combinator's Winter 2020 batch and launched that same February.
