n8n

n8n is a workflow automation platform for building integrations and automations through a visual, node-based interface, without being limited to click-only building. Where needed, any step can be extended with custom JavaScript or Python code, which sets n8n apart from purely visual no-code tools.

More than 500 pre-built nodes cover common applications, complemented by open API connections for anything not already covered. For AI-driven workflows, n8n supports multi-agent orchestration, RAG systems, and human-in-the-loop approvals, and the underlying language model can be swapped without rebuilding the workflow.

Its MCP integration allows n8n workflows to be built and updated directly from inside an AI application. n8n can be fully self-hosted — its source code is open on GitHub with more than 200,000 stars — or used as a managed cloud service; the project is licensed under a so-called "fair-code" model, which permits self-hosting and modification but rules out reselling it as a competing hosted service.

n8n was founded by Jan Oberhauser in Berlin, with its first public release in October 2019. According to the company, it now serves more than 200,000 community members along with organizations including Microsoft, Fender, and Deutsche Telekom.

Debugging features such as workflow history, real-time execution inspection, and step-level re-runs make it possible to pin down errors in complex automations precisely, instead of having to rerun an entire workflow from scratch.
