MongoDB develops the eponymous NoSQL document database, storing data as flexible, JSON-like documents rather than in the rigid tables of relational databases. Fields can vary between individual documents, making schema changes easier at runtime, and the architecture is designed for horizontal scaling across distributed systems.
The managed cloud platform MongoDB Atlas extends the core database with vector search for semantic search and RAG applications, stream processing via a Kafka integration, full-text search built directly into the database instead of a separate system, and native support for graph and geospatial data. Multi-document ACID transactions keep more complex, related writes consistent.
The business model is split in two: a free, open-source Community Edition is available at no cost, while MongoDB Atlas as a managed SaaS platform and Enterprise Advanced as a self-managed on-premises option offer paid alternatives for production environments with higher requirements.
MongoDB was founded in 2007 under the name 10gen by Dwight Merriman, Eliot Horowitz, and Kevin Ryan, who had previously worked together at DoubleClick, where they hit the limits of relational databases while serving several hundred thousand ad impressions per second. The first public release of MongoDB came in 2009, the company was renamed MongoDB Inc. in 2013, and it has been listed on the NASDAQ since 2017.
The name MongoDB derives from the English word "humongous," reflecting the founders' original goal of building a database that could effortlessly scale with the data volumes of modern web applications.
