Grafana Labs develops the Grafana observability platform, which turns metrics, logs, and traces from production systems into dashboards and analysis views. Besides Grafana itself, the company maintains several other open-source observability projects, including Loki for log aggregation, Prometheus/Mimir for metrics, and K6 for performance testing.
The official Grafana MCP Server makes this data directly accessible to AI agents — for example, to query dashboards or investigate incidents without manually calling the underlying API. Grafana Cloud complements the open-source core with a managed cloud offering that adds AI-powered analytics and anomaly detection.
The company states it has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms, and offers a free-forever plan alongside claims of up to 80% telemetry cost savings through adaptive data collection.
Beyond the general observability stack, Grafana Labs offers specialized solutions for Kubernetes monitoring, synthetic testing, and database observability, along with incident response tooling. The platform is built consistently on open standards such as OpenTelemetry, avoiding vendor lock-in for instrumentation.
Grafana itself started in 2014 as a fork of the Kibana dashboarding tool, initiated by Torkel Ödegaard, who wanted a more flexible visualization layer across different data sources rather than being tied to a single search engine. That openness to data sources remains a key differentiator from more closed observability platforms today.
