Shopify Dev MCP Server

Official Shopify Dev MCP server: search docs, introspect API schemas, validate GraphQL and Liquid — directly from your AI coding client.

Description

The Shopify Dev MCP Server is Shopify's official Model Context Protocol server for the developer documentation and API schemas on shopify.dev. It is aimed exclusively at developers building Shopify apps, extensions, and themes. The server is not a store-management tool: orders, products, and customer data are not accessible. Instead, it connects the AI client to Shopify's developer resources and enables contextual, hallucination-reduced answers to development questions. The official documentation page is https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/devmcp; the plugin repository lives at https://github.com/Shopify/shopify-plugins.

What is the Shopify Dev MCP Server?

The MCP server gives a compatible AI client access to Shopify's development resources: documentation content, API references, and schema data for the Shopify Admin API (GraphQL), the Storefront API, Shopify Functions, Liquid, and other platform surfaces. According to the provider, the agent can search developer documentation and API schemas, retrieve up-to-date answers about Shopify APIs, and validate code against Shopify schemas. The server was announced on 31 March 2025 in the Shopify Developer Changelog and runs as a local stdio process launched on demand via npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest. No authentication is required — the server needs neither a Shopify account nor an API key for documentation and schema queries.

Distinction from the Shopify AI Toolkit

Shopify publishes two complementary developer tools: the Shopify AI Toolkit and the Dev MCP Server. The Toolkit is a plugin package from the repository https://github.com/Shopify/Shopify-AI-Toolkit (538 stars, MIT) that bundles skills, hooks, and plugin definitions for various AI clients and is installed via claude plugin install shopify-ai-toolkit@claude-plugins-official. The Dev MCP Server is the underlying stdio protocol that the Toolkit uses in its MCP installation path, but it can also be configured directly without the Toolkit. For most developers the Toolkit is the recommended starting point; those who want more control over the MCP configuration can install the server directly.

Requirements

For the direct MCP server installation, the following components are needed: Node.js 18 or higher with the npx command available, and a compatible AI client. According to the official documentation, Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity CLI, Cursor, Hermes (via plugin), OpenClaw (via plugin), Pi (via plugin), and Visual Studio Code are supported. An internet connection is required on the first invocation so that npx can download the @shopify/dev-mcp@latest package (~3 MB) from the npm registry. No further installation steps or environment variables are needed for basic operation.

Features and tools

The Shopify Dev MCP Server provides the following capabilities according to the provider and the plugin README:

Documentation search: The server can search Shopify developer documentation on shopify.dev and return context-relevant excerpts to the AI agent. This enables answers to questions about APIs, configuration options, and best practices without the agent relying on outdated model memory.

API schema introspection: GraphQL schemas for the Shopify Admin API and the Storefront API can be queried directly from the server. The agent receives current field definitions, types, and available queries or mutations — a foundation for hallucination-reduced code completion.

Code validation: GraphQL queries, Liquid templates, and Shopify extensions can be validated against Shopify schemas to catch errors early. This is especially useful for extension migrations between API versions, such as moving from React-based checkout extensions to Polaris web components.

Development context: With the server installed, an agent can take on tasks that require detailed Shopify platform knowledge: choosing the right API surface, explaining Shopify CLI scaffolding commands, reviewing App Store requirements, or automating extension migrations.

Setup

Setup varies by client. For Claude Code, the direct MCP command is:

claude mcp add --transport stdio shopify-dev-mcp -- npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest

Restart Claude Code to load the new configuration. Alternatively, Shopify recommends the plugin for Claude Code:

claude plugin install shopify-ai-toolkit@claude-plugins-official

For Codex CLI:

codex mcp add shopify-dev-mcp --command "npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest"

For Cursor, the server can be added through the MCP settings or a ~/.cursor/mcp.json. For GitHub Copilot (VS Code), Gemini CLI, and other clients, plugin installation paths are available through the repository https://github.com/Shopify/shopify-plugins.

Security

Since the Shopify Dev MCP Server only provides read access to publicly available documentation and API schemas and requires no authentication, its risk profile is comparatively low. No store data, order information, or personal customer data is accessed. The server runs locally as a stdio process — there is no persistent network connection to a remote server. It should be noted, however, that the agent embeds the retrieved documentation content in model requests; anyone working with a proprietary model backend should verify what data the model requests contain. Prompt injection through manipulated documentation content is theoretically possible but practically very unlikely with Shopify's own documentation.

FAQ

Is the Shopify Dev MCP Server free? The npm package @shopify/dev-mcp is ISC-licensed and free to use. Costs may arise from the AI client or language model used. Current Shopify pricing information for developers is available at shopify.dev.

Do I need a Shopify account? No. The server accesses public documentation and schemas; no account is required for pure documentation and schema queries. A Shopify account would be needed for store management operations via the Shopify CLI, but that is not part of this MCP server.

Does the Dev MCP Server differ from the Shopify AI Toolkit? The Toolkit is a plugin package that uses the MCP server internally but also bundles skills and hooks. The Dev MCP Server can be installed directly without the Toolkit. For getting started, Shopify recommends the Toolkit; for manual setups or environments without plugin support, the direct MCP path is more suitable.

How current are the GitHub stars? The GitHub API reported exactly 7 stars for the plugin repository https://github.com/Shopify/shopify-plugins on 2026-09-08. The associated Shopify AI Toolkit repository https://github.com/Shopify/Shopify-AI-Toolkit counted 538 stars. These figures are point-in-time snapshots and not a quality judgement.

Requirements

Node.js 18 or higher with npx, compatible AI client (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, etc.), internet connection on first launch.

Installation instructions

For Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport stdio shopify-dev-mcp -- npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest, then restart Claude Code. Alternatively via plugin: claude plugin install shopify-ai-toolkit@claude-plugins-official.

npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest

Authentication

No authentication required; the server accesses public Shopify documentation and schemas.

Required access permissions

Read-only access to public Shopify developer documentation and API schemas; no store or customer data access.

Transmitted or stored data

The server runs locally as a stdio process and fetches Shopify documentation and schemas; retrieved content is embedded in the AI client's model requests.

Security risks

Low risk profile: read-only access to public content, no authentication, local stdio process. Retrieved documentation content flows into model requests.
