These details were checked against primary sources. Skill Road has not performed a practical client functionality test. Features and setup reflect project documentation, not independently confirmed operation.
Use published energy statistics rather than guessed figures
EIA Energy MCP Server is a cyanheads community project connecting MCP clients to the US Energy Information Administration data interface. It is not an official agency server. The connector can support research into energy supply and markets by organizing access to published statistics. Keep the origin of the data separate from the origin of the intermediary software. Giving an assistant access to a source does not automatically give it the expertise needed to interpret every energy-market measure or establish that its conclusion fits the question.
Let the research question determine the measurement
Before requesting a time series, decide whether you need generation, consumption, inventory or price observations. Similar names can conceal different definitions. Check geographic coverage, units and frequency. A monthly statistic is not evidence for a current daily value, and comparisons between energy types may require an explicit conversion or common denominator. These checks prevent a persuasive-looking report from combining technically valid numbers that cannot support the same claim. Ask the assistant to state its interpretation of the measure before proceeding to analysis.
The repository describes tools for navigating EIA routes, inspecting metadata and retrieving filtered observations. EIA's technical documentation explains how paths, periods and filters shape a request. Have the assistant show the selected route and parameters before a larger query. Retain them alongside the answer so someone else can reproduce the extraction. If a response contains only part of the available data, that limitation should be visible rather than hidden by a summary suggesting complete coverage of a market, period or geographic area.
Select credentials and deployment deliberately
Local operation requires an EIA API key according to the project. Free access still has technical limits and source-specific conditions. The documented public community endpoint removes installation work but adds another operator to the request path. Self-hosting provides configuration and access control while making ongoing maintenance your responsibility. Start with a narrow question involving public information. Internal procurement strategies or unpublished consumption profiles do not need to be included as background text sent to an external research service merely to locate a relevant public dataset.
Treat large-result handling as part of the workflow
Optional DataCanvas facilities support analysis of staged tables. If you enable them, understand storage location, access rights and data lifetime. Table deletion is not exposed by default. SQL support does not remove the need for clear filters or a check of result completeness. A missing observation is not a zero, and a truncated preview is not a full export. Make these checks part of the analysis before publishing a chart, rather than discovering the gap when someone tries to reproduce its underlying figures.
Research support is not a guaranteed forecast
The software uses Apache-2.0 licensing. EIA data conditions and attribution remain separate concerns. It can help with specialist research, teaching material and initial market analysis, but it does not guarantee future developments or make individualized economic decisions. Compare assistant responses with their original source and record retrieval time and methodological caveats. The useful outcome is a traceable route to energy statistics, not the assumption that connecting a tool replaces domain review, creates a validated forecast or makes every generated explanation safe to act upon.
Source review and verification limits
This entry was reviewed against the linked primary sources on 2 October 2026. Features and setup instructions reflect the project's documentation rather than a complete functional test performed by Skill Road. Before production use, connect with non-sensitive example data, inspect the enabled tools, and compare responses with their original source. Changes to the service or your client may require a fresh review. The review date is not an uptime guarantee.
Requirements
An MCP client. Local use requires Node.js 24 or newer or Bun 1.4.0 or newer and a free EIA API key according to the project. Optional DataCanvas features need additional configuration.
Installation instructions
Configure stdio with the npm package, MCP_TRANSPORT_TYPE=stdio and EIA_API_KEY. Documented remote example: https://eia-energy.caseyjhand.com/mcp. Do not rely on the tightly limited DEMO_KEY for sustained local use; pin a reviewed version before production.

Authentication
Local operation requires EIA_API_KEY. Data-source credentials are separate from authentication protecting your own MCP HTTP endpoint.
Required access permissions
Discover EIA routes, inspect metadata and filters, and query observations. Optional SQL reads staged tables; table removal requires explicit enablement.
Transmitted or stored data
Query parameters are sent to EIA or the community host. EIA_API_KEY is used for API requests according to configuration. Optional result tables are staged in the server environment.
Security risks
Do not confuse the connector with an official EIA service. Check units, frequency and query limits. Keep API keys out of shared URLs and logs; restrict HTTP and DataCanvas access.
