ClickUp MCP Server

Official hosted MCP server from ClickUp: Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and other assistants create tasks, log time, search docs and post in chat, signed in via OAuth.

Description

The ClickUp MCP Server connects your ClickUp Workspace to AI assistants. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor reach external services. ClickUp runs the server itself at mcp.clickup.com/mcp. So there is nothing to install; you just add that address to your assistant. Sign-in works through OAuth only. OAuth is a sign-in method where you grant the assistant access in your browser without handing over a password or an API key. According to ClickUp, the server deliberately does not accept personal API tokens.

What is the ClickUp MCP Server good for?

For many teams, ClickUp is where tasks, time tracking, docs and conversations come together. That breadth is what makes the server interesting. You can ask the assistant to turn meeting notes into tasks with assignees, priorities and due dates. You can ask which tasks in a list have been stuck in the same status for a long time. Or you can have it write release notes, status updates and portfolio summaries from the tasks you already have. ClickUp also lists summarizing comment and chat threads, including the action items that come out of them. Developers get a lot out of it too, because Claude Code or Cursor can file loose ends from coding work straight into ClickUp as tasks.

Tasks, lists and structure

ClickUp's tools reference lists 65 tools in eleven groups. Most of them deal with tasks: create, read, update, filter, move, add to other lists and merge. On top of that come dependencies, links, tags and custom fields. Lists and folders can be created and updated as well. With the Workspace hierarchy and member lookup, the assistant can work out on its own where a task belongs and who to assign it to. A group of generic operations also allows bulk actions such as archiving.

Time tracking, docs and chat

What sets this server apart from many other project management servers is the coverage beyond tasks. The assistant can start and stop timers, add time entries and report how long tasks sat in each status. It can create ClickUp Docs, read and edit pages, and download attachments. In ClickUp Chat, it reads channels and replies, sends messages and reacts to them. Reminders can be created and searched. A Workspace-wide search across tasks, docs and comments rounds it off. According to ClickUp, the server does not search connected third-party apps, though.

Which assistants are supported?

ClickUp's setup page covers Claude in the browser and desktop app, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, ChatGPT, Windsurf, Devin, Microsoft Copilot Studio and Google's Antigravity. Cursor has a marketplace listing, and ChatGPT has a ready-made ClickUp app. Other clients connect through the mcp-remote helper. If you build your own client, the docs require OAuth 2.1 with PKCE, an extra safeguard for the sign-in flow.

Quotas and limits

According to ClickUp, the server is available on every plan, including the free Free Forever plan. Without the Everything AI add-on, however, there is a daily quota of tool calls that grows with your plan. On the free plan, the vendor states roughly 100 calls per 24 hours, counted per Workspace and per client. With Everything AI, the public API limits apply instead. The server does not use AI Super Credits. Keep in mind as well: the server can move tasks to the trash, delete comments permanently, and merge tasks with no undo. ClickUp reserves the right to adjust the quotas later.

Who is the ClickUp MCP Server for?

The server pays off for teams that already organize their work in ClickUp and no longer want to handle reports, time tracking or task upkeep by hand. Project leads save themselves the weekly status report, and developers no longer have to leave the editor. If you use ClickUp only now and then, the free quota is enough. If you rely on the assistant heavily every day, check whether a higher plan or Everything AI is worth it. Compared with unofficial community ClickUp servers, which usually run on an API token, the official server is hosted, maintained by ClickUp and uses OAuth instead of long-lived keys.

Requirements

A ClickUp account on any plan, including Free Forever. Plus an MCP-capable client such as Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code or Windsurf. In ChatGPT Team, Enterprise and Edu, only owners and admins may set up MCP servers. Custom clients need OAuth 2.1 with PKCE.

Installation instructions

The ClickUp MCP Server gives your AI assistant access to your ClickUp Workspace. ClickUp hosts it at https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp, so there is nothing to install. This guide covers setup in the common clients and what to keep in mind afterwards.

Step 1: Check first

You need a ClickUp account. According to ClickUp, the server works on every plan, including Free Forever. Sign-in always uses OAuth in the browser; you do not need an API key. When you sign in, you choose which Workspaces the assistant may see. Only share the ones you actually need.

Claude in the browser and desktop app

On Claude Pro, Team or Enterprise, open Settings, scroll to Connectors and click Add. Enter ClickUp as the name and https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp as the Remote MCP Server URL. On the free Claude plan, it only works in the desktop app: under Settings, Developer, open claude_desktop_config.json and add a clickup entry with the command npx and the args -y, mcp-remote and https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp. Then restart the app.

Step 2: Claude Code

Run claude mcp add --transport http clickup https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp in your terminal. Then start a session, run /mcp and pick clickup. Your browser opens so you can sign in to ClickUp.

bash
claude mcp add --transport http clickup https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp

ChatGPT

In ChatGPT, open Apps and search for ClickUp, which is also listed under Productivity. Click Connect and then Connect ClickUp. Sign in, choose your Workspaces and confirm with Connect Workspace. In ChatGPT Team, Enterprise and Edu, only owners and admins may set up MCP servers.

Step 3: Cursor, VS Code and Windsurf

In Cursor, install ClickUp from the marketplace or add a clickup entry with a url field and the server address to mcp.json. In VS Code, run code --add-mcp '{"type":"http","name":"clickup","url":"https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp"}'. You will then find ClickUp MCP in the list of MCP servers; start it from the cogwheel with Start Server and follow the sign-in. In Windsurf, open the MCP servers under Cascade, choose Add custom server and enter the address in the serverUrl field.

bash
code --add-mcp '{"type":"http","name":"clickup","url":"https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp"}'

Keep an eye on the quotas

Without the Everything AI add-on, each plan has a daily quota of tool calls, counted per Workspace and per client over 24 hours. Every tool call counts once; connecting and fetching the tool list do not. Once the quota is used up, the server returns RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED with a wait time. Retrying during that time does not extend the block, but it does not reset it either.

Work safely

The server can move tasks to the trash, delete comments permanently, merge tasks with no undo and send chat messages. Review these actions before you approve them. Text in tasks or docs can contain hidden instructions that the assistant would otherwise follow. You can revoke access in your ClickUp account settings.

claude mcp add --transport http clickup https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp

Authentication

OAuth in the browser only; personal API tokens are not accepted. When signing in, you choose which Workspaces the assistant may see. Access can be revoked again in your ClickUp account settings.

Required access permissions

Read and write access in the shared Workspaces with the signed-in user's permissions: tasks, lists, folders, tags, time entries, docs, chat, comments and reminders. Tasks can be moved to the trash and comments deleted permanently.

Transmitted or stored data

The server runs at ClickUp. Content the assistant reads from ClickUp goes to the respective AI provider and is subject to that provider's privacy terms. Self-hosting is not offered.

Security risks

Medium, because the server can change, merge and trash tasks, delete comments permanently and send chat messages. A crafted task or doc text with hidden instructions can trigger unwanted actions. Review write actions before approving them and only share the Workspaces you need.
