Setting up Codebase Memory MCP

Install DeusData’s local code knowledge graph in a controlled way, connect an agent, and start with read-only analysis.

Published on 09.09.2026

Codebase Memory MCP indexes a local repository and exposes a knowledge graph to coding agents through MCP. A controlled first setup is worthwhile because the official installer can write agent configuration.

Review the installer first

The official product page is github.com/DeusData/codebase-memory-mcp. Review the installer and current release page linked there before use. Anyone wanting a binary-only installation can use the provider’s --skip-config option, then register the MCP server manually in the selected client.

Install and restart the agent

The standard macOS and Linux path uses the official installation script. It detects available agents and configures them according to the provider. Fully restart the selected agent afterward so it reloads its MCP configuration.

Index the first repository

Next, open a non-sensitive project and ask for a read-only task such as: “Index this project and list its main entry points.” Check several answers against the named files. This confirms that the intended project path was indexed and that results make sense for the repository.

Enable watchers and the viewer deliberately

According to the provider, the server can watch changes and provide a local graph viewer on localhost. Enable both only when needed at first. Teams should decide where the shared cache lives, who can access the workstation, and whether the repository contains sensitive data.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an API key? Not for local indexing according to the provider. Are files uploaded? DeusData describes processing as local, but MCP results can still reach the selected agent’s model. Is the server useful for every project? Often not for small scripts, but it can be valuable for larger codebases and recurring architecture questions.
